And when the King approached for building a fort in that place, the ascetic agreed on one condition. The constraint was that the shadow of the fort should not fall upon his retreat.

To the king’s bewilderment, the sage told that if the shadow traces his home, the palace would tumble down. After the construction, as fate planned it, the shadows of the fort engulfed the saint’s abode. Resonating to the words of the saint, the structure doomed with time and destroyed the villages nearby. And to the astonishment of many, if a house was built in the area, the roof will collapse subsequently.

Princess Ratnavati and the black magician

Though he knew that he was not suitable for the princess he decided to beguile her with his magical powers.

As a part of his plan, the sorcerer enchanted the oil that was purchased by the princess’s mistress for her. But the sorcerer’s plan backfired to his dismay when princess Ratanavati found the trick of the enchanter. She poured the bewitched oil on the ground which morphed into a rock and crushed the Tantrik. The Tantrik bestowed a curse that no one will live at peace in the fort and the area surrounding them during his last breath.

The following year war was fought between the inhabitants of Bhangarh and Ajabargh in which the beautiful princess Ratnavati was killed. This adds weight to the sorcerer’s imprecation. It is still believed that no one in the fort or the village will be reborn and ghosts inhabit the fort after 6. But the hopes are still high among the locals that the princess will be reborn again and break the curse that has been encircling the Bhangarh fort.
